Vale Our Beloved Richard Hughes (10th July 2026)
Richard lived an incredibly full and adventurous life.
Growing up in Canada, he loved sharing stories of ice hockey, skiing, and the treasured summers spent with his brothers at the family lake cottage. His adventurous spirit took him far and wide, from a penniless overland journey from London to Singapore in the late 1960s on his way to Australia, to countless travels around the world with family and friends in the years that followed.
Richard was known for his kind heart, generous nature, quick wit, creative spark, and unwavering devotion to those he loved. In Newcastle, it is rare to go long without meeting someone who fondly remembers him as the person who gave them their first opportunity through one of his McDonald's restaurants.
He was immensely proud of his four daughters, his two stepsons, his six grandchildren, and his beloved wife, Kay. Despite a long and courageous 16 year battle with dementia, he remained deeply loved by all who knew him and he will be missed beyond measure.
